Washi Tape Envelopes

I made these cute little washi tape envelopes when I realized that my niece was graduating from high school and I needed to get a gift together pronto.  While I obviously only needed one for her gift, I decided to pretty up a few more envelopes, while I had everything out, for those times when I am in a super big hurry and need to tuck some cash or a gift card in one of these babies and run.

They were super simple and fun to put together.

And my niece's, of course, got a little cash tucked inside and a congrats tag.

(You can download my little congrats tag here.  It is designed for a 1 inch circle punch, but you could easily cut it out with scissors as well.)

Cute and easy little washi tape envelopes!  Love them!

Cut-off shorts

Today I spent a few minutes making cut-off shorts from jeans with holes in the knees, using this method.  I don't really love the look of cut-offs that are fraying out of control, so this method takes care of that problem and is an easy way to salvage jeans to be used as summer play clothes.  All-in-all it took about 25 minutes to do 14 pairs.

I also spent about 5 minutes salvaging my three-year-olds favorite shirt.

The bottom of this long-sleeved shirt had gotten chewed up by our washer.  (That darn front-loader.  People love them, but I am not a fan.)

So, this much-loved long-sleeved shirt is now a cute short-sleeved shirt.  Perfect for Summer.

Bathroom Shelves

The first time I saw a picture of bathroom shelves installed over the toilet, I couldn't believe I hadn't thought of it myself.  Our house is on the small side and I try to maximize every inch of space I have.  This idea was simply brilliant to me.

On a recent trip to Ikea I picked up three of these shelves and installed them above the toilet in one of our bathrooms.   I then proceeded to put some large baskets, that I was no longer using in another room, up on the shelves to hold items like toilet paper and extra washcloths and hand towels.

I hated it!!  The baskets that had worked so well in another room just felt so dark and heavy up on those shelves.  I was starting to regret my decision, but I really needed the extra storage, so I began to think about painting the baskets.

I had painted baskets before, and I know that it can take can, after can, after can, of spray paint and those baskets just seem to suck all of the paint right in.  On top of that, what if  I took the time and money to spray paint the baskets and I still didn't like them?   I started off painting one little basket white (you can see it up there), set it on the shelf and spent a few weeks mulling it over.

I finally decided to go for it, but I did things just a little differently this time around.  I had a little can of kitchen and bath latex paint in my garage and I decided to brush it on the baskets as kind of a primer before I painted them up with spray paint.

Here they are after I brushed them.  This method actually really worked and it only took a can and a half of good white spray paint to finish all of the baskets.

When I first put the baskets back up on the shelves they seemed better, but still a little blah.  So, I embellished the fresh white baskets around the top band, filled them back up, and replaced them on the shelves.

I am so happy I decided to paint the baskets.  It took me several hours, but I was able to use supplies I had on hand, so this project didn't end up costing me an extra dime and I think it makes a huge difference.

So much better!

Chore Cards

It seems we are always having to change up the chore system around here.  The boys get bored and the system in place becomes a lot less effective.  This chore card system is our latest, and surprisingly, after a few months, the boys are still enthused by it.

Check out my post on these, plus the free download for them, at my other blog, 5 Little Guys.

Washi Tape Basket Makeover

I have been making over a few baskets to be used in a project that will be shared soon, but in the meantime I wanted to share the easiest thing I did to these baskets that really made them pop.

Here is my plain white basket.  Cute, but a little bland and boring.

I added a strip of washi tape around the top band and suddenly this basket has a whole lot of personality.

I love how the washi tape looks a lot like fabric when you are looking at these baskets, you can only tell it is tape upon very close inspection.

So easy and it makes a big difference.  Love washi tape!!
